OUR ArtProjects is delighted to present a six channel video installation by Malaysian artist, Chris Chong Chan Fui at the 2015 Art Stage Singapore. Chong is selected to take part in the Southeast Asia Platform exhibition titled Eagles Fly, Sheep Flock: Biographical Imprints - Artistic Practices in Southeast Asia, a showcase of emerging and established artists from the region. Chong will exhibit his 2009 video installation titled, HEAVENHELL.

HEAVENHELL, in collaboration with sound artist Yasuhiro Morinaga, was commissioned by NPO Koganecho Area Management Center as part of Chong’s residency at the art center, which is located in the former red-light district of Koganecho in Yokohama, Japan. Koganecho was the model for ‘hell’ in Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film High and Low. However, because of the district’s notoriety, shooting on location was not possible in the 1960s.

Chong’s HEAVENHELL looks to reclaim this missing history by reshooting the slum scene on the same street that Kurosawa was supposed to. Chong referred to scenes shot on studio set at the time by Kurosawa to create images of Koganecho of the past and the present. The six channel video installation explores the memories of Koganecho through visual and audio elements as it intermingles scenes from imagination and reality.

HEAVENHELL premiered at the International Festival of Arts and Media Yokohama in 2009. It has since been exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA), Kino Der Kunst in Germany, MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, and EYE Film Institute in the Netherlands.
