Why do people migrate? Usually it's because they want a better life outside their own country. But once abroad, how does their relationship to home and nation change over time? Are they still pulled by personal ties to the town they grew up in and a sense of civic responsibility to the country they left behind? Or are they purposefully dislocated, connected only by nostalgia and fading memories, whilst remaining oblivious to the urgencies of current politics? These questions and more form the starting point of celebrated Malaysian artist, Phuan Thai Meng's latest solo exhibition at OUR ArtProjects.

Conducting various interviews with Malaysians living abroad, he interprets these ‘lost voices’ into the exhibition through his signature sense of humour and satire, to discuss disconnection and connection to place. Presenting a selection of hyperrealist paintings, installations and an interactive project in the gallery, Thai Meng uses the visual language of popular culture like postcards and newspapers, as well as iconic documents such as the Malaysian identity card, to communicate the contradictions of nationhood and the importance of knowing where you come from.
