Theatre of Absurdities features a new body of work by Jason Montinola that transforms the pictorial space of his canvas into a spectacle for theatre, with him as the playwright; the paintings as the characters; and the spectators as the audience.
Central to Montinola's painterly explorations are the narratives that animate our lives beyond our consciousness. He delves into the dreamscape we enter as we lose ourselves from our waking reality. Often what we experience and remember of our dreams is beyond comprehension, fragments of incoherent episodes when pieced together makes little sense at all. Many theories exist as to why they happen, but dreams are highly absurd; they resist meaning and defy logic, and remain as that, offering the dreamer nothing more and nothing less.
In the Theatre of Absurdities, Montinola provides us with the high dramas, the gothic expressions, the disconnected epics that strip away the pretense of the logical and the rational. In doing so, he visualises the emotional contours and dramatic arcs that continue to fascinate us every night when we drop our heavy eyelids and enter our dreaming life.
