OUR ArtProjects is delighted to present Bree Jonson’s first solo exhibition of paintings in Kuala Lumpur, Therion Mythos. Therion, meaning beast in Greek, explores the darker recesses of our modern psyche. Here, familiar animals are seen to be devouring each other. It is an unsettling picture of monstrosity.

Bree Jonson derives her passion for animals from her childhood dreams. She dreamt of becoming an animal and of walking on four feet. The intensity of such dreams has been imprinted in her mind.

On her canvases, we witness a dream-like commingling of the mythic and the real. These animalistic creatures, wrestling for survival, become an allegory or a myth. Her creatures are carnivorous and they engage in a carnival of life and death, of pleasure and pain.

Alluding to an Asian gothic, Therion Mythos invites us to delve into the artist’s imaginary world, which confronts us with our innate kinship with the animal within us, that our rational minds have long repressed.
